About Celtic Rock '08

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Celtic Rock ‘08

A Festival of Contemporary and Traditional Irish Music

Celtic Rock ’08 takes place on Saturday, October 18th at the Irish American Community Center (IACC), 9 Venice Place, East Haven Connecticut.  The event offers an eclectic assortment of Irish music in all its forms and varieties from 12:00pm until 8:00pm.

Headliners at this first annual gathering include Black 47, with its unblinkingly political and thoroughly Irish form of rock n’ roll.  Its songs cover topics from conflict in Northern Ireland to civil rights and urban unrest in contemporary New York.  The Highland Rovers Band fuses popular rock percussive rhythms, bagpipes and vocal harmonies to create an intricate and fresh sound.  The band’s danceable music showcases its universal appeal to both modern rock lovers and audiences searching for a distinct Celtic flavor. Unforgettable Fire brings the very best U2 tribute possible to the stage.  They do everything in their power (from wardrobe to lighting) to recreate the live U2 concert setting.

"We’ve assembled some of the most intriguing artists in Irish music today," says organizer and IACC member Bill Hylton, "I expect this to be an annual event and to ultimately become the biggest Irish music festival in New England."

Michael Lombardi of the popular television series Rescue Me will serve as emcee for the Festival, and that’s not all.   Renowned Donegal fiddler P.V. O’Donnell will regale the crowd with jigs, reels, and hornpipes played in his own authentic traditional style.  Organizers are still signing up bands, and more will participate. Additional local Irish musicians will also perform.

There will be kids’ activities on offer, and children under 16 will be admitted free of charge.  Food, beer, wine and refreshments will be served.  Tickets are $40 and benefit the New Haven Youth Gaelic Football Program as they prepare for national competition in San Francisco next July.

Sponsors include The Playwright Restaurant, State Farm Insurance, Savin Dental Care, Clean Harbors and Dr. Jeff Berkley DDS. Music presented by Horizon Music Group of West Haven CT.

About Gaelic Football

Gaelic football is a national sport of Ireland and has been described as a mix of rugby and soccer although it predates both games by many centuries.  Over a hundred children from ages six to sixteen are involved in the sport in the New Haven area alone, competing regionally with clubs from New York to Boston.  Every year they travel to the Continental Youth Championships for competition against teams from major US cities such as Chicago, Philadelphia and Denver.  Next July the tournament will take place in San Francisco, California and Celtic Rock ‘08 is raising funds for the trip.  Families interested in learning more about New Haven Gaelic Football may contact the team registrar at wendy.mackey@yale.edu.
